Adelaide On the Water Show 2016

The Adelaide On the Water show was held for its second year on the 15 & 16 October. This was Fleming Yachts’ first year in Adelaide and we were happy to exhibit Fleming 55 hull# 175 now 10 years old. It is a credit to her Owners as the many guest on board thought she was brand new! Unfortunately the Sunday was much slower with visitors due to heavy rain throughout the day.dsc01836

RPAYC Newport Open Day

The Opening Day of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club’s 2016-17 Sailing Season, in conjunction this year with it being the Club celebrating its 150 years of continual yacht racing and sailing; this year to be known as the Club’s ‘Sesquicentenary Sailing Season’, commenced on 3rd September ‘with a bang’ – as the canon was fired from the RPAYC Newport Clubhouse grounds situated on one of Sydney’s iconic natural northern waterways called Pittwater.

The RPAYC Commodore Ian Audsley began formal proceedings with his inspiring  and informative address, followed by the National Anthem which was ably led by the Club Patron the Hon Bronwyn Bishop, who also addressed the gathering. Following a further introductory address by Jason Falinski, his first year as the local Federal Member of our National Parliament, the audience was then treated to the personal experiences and resume given by the special guests-of-honour, our two Rio Olympic Silver medallists, Club Member – Jason Waterhouse with his cousin crew member Lisa Darmanin – they having only two weeks earlier raced the world in Rio.

To add a further dimension to the Sesquicentenary tone of what is this regular annual Opening Day event leading into the upcoming sailing season, the Club was dressed in full nautical regalia, including the stunning presence of not one, but two beautifully-presented Fleming 55 ‘flagship’ vessels, moored and dressed on the head of the marina – to accommodate the VIP guests plus other Sydney and Pittwater-based Yacht Club dignitaries and special guests, for the official salute and sail-past by Club Member’s yachts.

Unfortunately this year the weather forecast for gale-force winds was to maintain its prediction, with wind gusts of more than 45 knots being recorded during the event – hence reducing the sail-past fleet to only a few hardy and intrepid crews!

However, far from harming the festivities of the Day, the catering presented by the Club on the two RPAYC Members’ Fleming yachts – “Le Billet” and “Maude Hesse”, enabled the VIPs and other guests to thoroughly enjoy the ambiance provided in the secure knowledge of their being on board two such fine vessels (and at a sailing Club!!)

The guests were finally extricated from the two Flemings and headed back into the Clubhouse for a thoroughly enjoyable lunch, and despite the inclement wind and weather outside, a continuation of what turned-out to be an extremely successful and enjoyable Opening Day event.

A great start to the Royal Prince Alfred’s 2016-17 Sesquicentenary Sailing Season!!

It’s Laser Gold for Tom Burton

The Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition

Tom Burton celebrates winning gold in the Men’s Laser class

Sponsored by Fleming Yachts, Tom Burton has achieved the highlight of his sailing career by winning gold in the men’s Laser class event and in doing so, he won Australia’s first sailing gold of the Rio Olympics.

Tom’s golden moment represents the culmination of many years Laser sailing and only come after a very intense and closely fought medal race.

The 26 year old, in second place going into the final, needed to draw on all his racing experience to fight a tactical battle with the overall leader, Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic. But with shrewd opening gambit, Tom forced his rival into a mistake, resulting in a penalty turn, leaving Tom to race for the line. Even then, in order to secure gold he needed to overhaul most of the fleet to finish third, enough of a margin over his rival and enough to seize the top spot in dramatic style.

“The percentage chance that I could pull off such a dramatic move was pretty slim but it came off,” said an ecstatic Burton after the race.

Duncan Cowie from the company, said:

“We knew that Tom would give this event his very best shot, but to snatch victory in such a thrilling way was remarkable. The top spot on the podium is his reward for the dedication and hard work he has put in over recent years and in our sponsorship of Tom, we, at Fleming Yachts are delighted to have played a small part in his success. Congratulations Tom!”

Sam Nicholas from the company was delighted to attend the welcome home event for The Australian Sailing Team held at Middle Harbour Yacht Club on 24th August 2016, were he was able to catch up with Tom and congratulate him on his result in Rio.

Tom Burton selected for RIO Olympics

L1160718Sponsored by Fleming Yachts, Tom achieved another career milestone as his selection to the 2016 Australian Olympic Team for Rio has just been announced.

This latest achievement represents the culmination of many years Laser sailing & comes after a very closely fought 2015 season & a tough selection process for the one Laser spot in the Rio team.

Tom commented, “The battle to get this spot was of the highest standard. At the moment Australia are ranked one & two in the Laser world, so to win the honour of representing your country is a dream come true & the thought of bringing home a medal will drive me to train & compete even harder. I’d like to thank all my supporters & sponsors for their help & assure them that I’ll definitely be going for gold in Rio!”

Burton has a good feel for what the atmosphere of the Games will be like. “I’ve been to Rio five or so times now. It’s got some awesome weather. I have no doubt the city will turn the atmosphere on come Games time and it will be a sight to see.

Duncan Cowie, from the company, said, “We were confident that Tom would continue his winning ways & now that he’s got his chance to shine on the World’s greatest sporting stage, all of us wish him good luck & fair winds in Rio.”
